The SFUSD has sent out layoff notices to 279 teachers and 124 paraprofessionals. If these layoffs go through, it will lead to dramatic increases in class sizes and loss of services and programs at schools across the city.

The 124 paraprofessional layoffs will primarily impact low-income students and students of color. The proposed layoffs would eliminate dozens of educators who do the important work of community and family outreach.

The SFUSD is proposing to layoff 38 teachers and 31 paraprofessionals in the Child Development Program. Because of state-mandated staffing ratios, the district would be out of compliance with state law if the layoffs go through, and could be forced to close dozens of pre-K classrooms.

This school year the SFUSD will be provided with $18 million dollars from the City of San Francisco and the Federal Government to stop educator layoffs. In fact, this money is explicitly required to be spent to stop layoffs. $8 million will come from the San Francisco Rainy Day Fund, and $10 million has already come from the EduJobs bill signed by President Obama in August of 2010.

This school year, the SFUSD is also asking for severe cuts to school site budgets - eliminating art, music, and after school programs in many schools. The district should restore full funding to school sites and look elsewhere to make the cuts. Cutting costs at the central office and eliminating expensive consultant contracts should be the first place to look. What You Can Do to Help

Please contact the Board of Education and the Superintendent and ask them to keep class sizes small and to maintain services and programs at the schools by using the $8 million from the Rainy Day Fund and the $10 million from the federal government to rescind all layoffs. Please tell the Board of Education also to restore funding to the schools in order to maintain important services and programs.

What You Can Do:

1. Call the SF Board of Education at 241-6427

2. Call the Superintendent at 241-6121

3. Send an email:

Sample Letter to the Board of Education:

Dear SF Board of Education Commissioners & Superintendent Garcia,

Your proposed school site budget cuts and the layoffs of teachers and paraprofessionals will have a devastating impact on our schools and our students.

Without delay, please use the $18 million available to you from the Rainy Day Fund and the federal EduJobs bill to immediately rescind all of the layoffs.

I ask that you also restore all school budgets, in order to maintain valuable school programs and supplies. Cuts should be made as far away from the classroom as possible. Cutting costs at the central office and eliminating expensive consultant contracts should be the first place to look.

Sincerely,

Your Name & School
