Bob Landis – UESF mourns passing of friend, leader, warrior

San Francisco, SFUSD, and UESF lost a great friend and warrior last month with the passing of Bob Landis. Bob was a veteran and a teacher for almost four decades. Along with his wife Bette, he was an activist within the Democratic Party, a leader of the local CTA, and one of the people whose dedication and energy made the merger that resulted in the UESF come to successful fruition. Even in retirement, Bob continued to serve with his monthly trips to Sacramento to keep an eye on the retirement board.

As a music teacher at Giannini Middle School, Bob touched the lives of countless young people in whom he infused a love of music. As a teacher leader, Bob touched the lives of thousands of us who profited by his resolute belief in the union and the profession and his example of cheerful perseverance.

Shortly before his passing, Bob was honored by the School Board at a session where they resolved to name the auditorium at Giannini in his honor. His life and accomplishments polished and brought praise to the image of a teacher. He honored all of us by his example, and we will be in his debt as we go forward with the work to which he dedicated his life.
