UESF Paraprofessionals
Yolanda Travis, student advisor at Hillcrest Elementary, listens to a report of a Safety Patrol monitor.Just for Paraprofessionals
by Bradley Reeves, UESF Vice President, Paras
Paras are entitled
to longevity pay after 10 years
Paras who have worked more than ten years for SFUSD should receive a thirty cent hourly raise for longevity pay.To see if you’re getting longevity pay, check your pay stub against Appendix C – Salary Schedules of the Para Contract. Add bilingual pay if you get it, and see if that matches the rate on your pay check. If you seem to be about thirty cents an hour short, you’re probably not getting longevity pay.
FAX a copy of your pay stub to 241.6543, Attention: Classified Para Department and request that they explain why you have not been getting longevity pay. Ask when you should expect it. If you do not hear back from them, FAX the same information to Bradley Reeves, UESF at 956.8374.
Be patient. For longevity pay, a para’s entire employment history has to be examined regarding leaves of absence or changes in assigned hours. Each retro longevity pay situation takes a lot of time to calculate.
Close to 300 paras were identified last fall. We are trying to get everyone paid as soon as possible.
No Child Left Behind requirements for paras:
Since 2002, the law calls for paras and teachers to be 'Highly Qualified' by 2006. Paras must have: 1) An Associates degree, or 2) 48 units of general education, or 3) passed a test. The only test now recognized by SFUSD is the CBEST, which is given seasonally all over the Bay Area. For more info, go to www.cbest.nesinc.com. This issue will be a topic of negotiations with the district. We’ll keep you informed of any changes.
These are the breaks: A four to five-hour workday entitles you to one 15-minute break. If you work more than five hours, you should get two 15-minute breaks and an unpaid lunch period of no less than 30 minutes. If you’re required to be with a student during lunch, this time is part of your assignment and paid.Pay for hours in excess of assigned time: “Employees who are required to attend school site meetings, consultations, field trips, or other activities which extend beyond the normal work day shall be compensated at their appropriate hourly rate of pay for such work.”
