UESF – Defend the Classroom

Write to our state legislators & Governor Schwarzenegger
Ask them to fully fund education & vital public services

UESF members, parents, and concerned community members are encouraged to write to our representatives in Sacramento to demand full funding for education and other vital services. Remember to personalize the letter with details about your classroom, your students, and how any further cuts will affect you.

The list below includes not only our state legislators from Sacramento, but leaders of both political parties in the State Assembly and the State Senate.

Step #1: Copy & paste the following into your email (Remember to send UESF a copy):

assemblymember.ammiano@assembly.ca.gov, assemblymember.ma@assembly.ca.gov, senator.leno@senate.ca.gov, senator.yee@senate.ca.gov, assemblymember.garrick@assembly.ca.gov, senator.hollingsworth@sen.ca.gov, senator.steinberg@senate.ca.gov, John.Perez@assembly.ca.gov, ask-uesf@uesf.org

Step #2: Copy and paste the following and then personalize:

To our elected leadership in Sacramento:

I am writing to ask that you do everything you can in the upcoming state budget to restore the core services that our families, businesses, and communities rely on. Two years of budget cuts have done untold damages to our schools, healthcare, and public services. Any more cuts will not only undermine our state's economic recovery, but will put a generation of students at risk.

As you know, California already ranks near the bottom for spending on schools. Simply put, there is nothing more to cut that won't directly hurt our students. Restoring funding to our schools will have an immediate impact - these vital resources can go to lower class sizes, restore lost programs, rehire teachers and paraprofessionals, close the achievement gap, and maintain vital support services.

You have the power to enact common sense tax and budget reforms - close corporate tax loopholes, rescind tax-cuts for corporations and the wealthy, institute an oil severance tax, and end the undemocratic rules that require 2/3 of the legislature to pass a budget and raise revenues.

Our families are hurting more than ever from the recession. We ask that you take the courageous political step to protect our schools and vital services. Our children deserve it.

Sincerely,
