UESF Campaign to Stop Education Budget Cuts

Hundreds of Teachers Rally on February 3rd to Protest the Race to the Bottom

On February 3rd, hundreds of teachers, parents, and students rallied at SF City Hall to protest the $10.8 billion in education cuts proposed by Governor Schwarzenegger. With our schools facing thousands of teacher layoffs, dramatic increases in class size, and cuts to vital programs and services, the rally showed that teachers, parents, and students are willing to take a stand for our schools.

On Thursday, January 15th, in his State of the State address Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said there were only weeks until our state faces financial insolvency.

But the Governor's own budget plan would decimate public education with billions of dollars in cuts. These drastic cuts at a time when our students and our schools are making such remarkable progress make no sense. It is an insult to our children and our future.

Petition Campaign

UESF has created a petition that we ask you and your colleagues sign and return to the unon office. It is addressed to the ‘Big 5’ in Sacramento – Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, Senate President Pro Tem Darell Steinberg, Republican Assembly leader Mike Villines, and Republican Senate leader Dave Cogdill.

Please circulate this petition at your school site. A good way to do so is by placing it right next to your staff sign-in sheet in the office. We also ask that you take a group photo to place on the front of the petition. Of course, we encourage you to take these photos wearing your UESF t-shirts.

UESF Area Representatives will follow up with the Building Reps at your school sites to help coordinate the petition drive. They can come out to your school to take the photo and to bring UESF t-shirts if you need them.

In a meeting UESF had on January 15, 2009 with SFUSD Superintendent Carlos Garcia we discussed the likelihood of teacher layoff notices in San Francisco. By law, those notices must be received by March 13, 2009.
