Fairness Act PetitionHelp Second Career Teachers & Paras
California, along with 14 other states, punishes second-career teachers and paraprofessionals by reducing or eliminating Social Security benefits when they retire. This not only hurts teachers and paras, but negatively impacts California’s ability to recruit second-career professionals into our public schools.
UESF is therefore helping our sister union in Los Angeles (the United Teachers of LA) in distributing a petition to overturn these unfair provisions by urging Congress to pass HR 82 (Berman and McKeon) and S 206 (Feinstein and Collins).
These petitions were distributed to substitute teachers at their September 20, 2007 meeting. We urge everyone who is a registered voter to sign the petition and return it to UTLA by February 1, 2008. UTLA has been given assurances by the chair of the Ways and Means Committee that HR82 will be heard in February.
On November 6th, the US Senate Finance Committee's Subcommittee on Social Security, Pensions and Family Policy held a hearing on the matter. With the support from the National Education Association, the committee heard testimony from several teachers negatively affected by the law.
