The United Educators of San Francisco, the exclusive representative of 6,000 teachers, paraprofessionals, and other school workers in the San Francisco Unified School District, has endorsed candidates for the Board of Education race in November.

The UESF process, under the direction of Lowell teacher, Ken Tray, is a month-long sequence that begins with questionnaires, followed by interviews and face-to-face questioning, recommendations, and finally a vote on endorsement.  All candidates were considered, ten were interviewed, and three have been chosen.

Bob Twomey is a parent of two children who have been in the San Francisco public schools.  He has been a volunteer in elementary schools and began an after-school soccer program for several Hayes Valley schools.  Bob works for United Healthcare West (SEIU) and has been a part of the labor movement throughout his working life.  Bob Twomey will bring the Board of Education expertise in dealing with mandated and necessary modernization work and contracts in the District.

Kim-Shree Maufas is the mother of a SFUSD high school student.  She has served as the parent liaison at Thurgood Marshall High School and was PTSA president.  She works for the Commission on the Status of Women, and is currently completing her MBA in finance.  Kim-Shree’s financial background will be helpful to the Board of Education as they face continuing budget struggles in the coming year.

Hydra Mendoza is the mother of two current SFUSD students.  She currently serves as Mayor Gavin Newsom’s education advisor.  Hydra is the former Executive Director of Parents for Public Schools and has been an active participant in the school district throughout this century.  Hydra Mendoza’s involvement in the broad educational community will help the Board of Education reach out and embrace the diverse spectrum of the population of San Francisco.

The November 2006 election is the first attempt at electoral office for all three candidates.  UESF believes that Bob Twomey, Kim-Shree Maufas, and Hydra Mendoza reflect different strengths, different constituencies, and the right qualities to lead the district’s students to continued success.  Bob Twomey, Kim-Shree Maufas, and Hydra Mendoza have also been endorsed by the Democratic County Central Committee and the San Francisco Labor Council.
