Like any organization, UESF needs money to function. It collects most of that money from the teachers and united support personnel it represents, either as membership dues or agency feespayments for representation for those who are not members. (Check the "After-Tax Deduction" box on your salary warrant to verify your status.) In turn, the money UESF receives is spent for the direct benefit of those it represents in ways, including, but not limited to:
- Lobbying for legislation at the local, state and national level.
- Negotiation of contracts to improve our wages, benefits and other terms and conditions by which we work.
- Enforcement of contracts and handling of grievances, including legal fees and the cost of arbitration.
- Benefits and Insurance that include occupational liability, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, free legal service, discounts to theme parks and rental cars, pet insurance and savings on prescriptions (including your parents).
The last item on the list of benefits is only available to UESF members. To take advantage of the benefits and insurance policies provided through UESF affiliates, SFUSD teachers and support staff are urged to ask Union Building Representatives for a membership card or call UESF at 956-8373 for a membership application.
A merged union, UESF is affiliated with both the California Teachers Association/National Teachers Association (CTA/NEA) and the California Federation of Teachers/American Federation of Teachers (CFT/AFT). From dues and agency fees it collects, UESF pays "per capitas" or a portion of those dues/fees to its affiliates with which UESF performs a myriad of services as outlined below:
UESF's Budget
Revenues:
- UESF membership dues = Membership dues are based upon local dues and affiliate dues. The Constitution and By-Laws of UESF regulate the dues amount.
- UESF agency fees = If an individual does not join the union, an agency fee is deducted from their salary warrant each pay period.
- Affiliate Funding = The affiliates CTA/NEA and CFT/AFT provide UESF with staff funding. The agreement reached between the affiliates and the UESF have established that staff-funding amount to be at a rate of 28% of dues paid to each individual affiliate.
- Bank interest and other income
Expenses:
- UESF Employees = Salary and benefits for the office staff, representation staff and officers.
- Affiliates =Dues/per capitas to the AFT, NEA, CFT and CTA.
- Office Expenses= Mortgage and upkeep on the building, utilities, supplies, equipment, etc.
- Information Dissemination = Expenses incurred publication of the UESF Bulletin and the UESF Educator, by all the committees such as the Executive Board, Assembly, Elementary Committee, Middle School Committee, High School Committee and expenses incurred for printing and postage.
- PR = Monies used to support other community organizations, i.e. ticket purchases, emergency relief, and scholarship donations.
- Conventions and conferences = Sending elected delegates to the NEA, AFT, CTA CFT, conventions and sending representation to various conferences related to labor and union management and organization.
- Legal = Legal retainers, arbitration costs. AFT insurance
- PR = Expenses incurred by the Peer Assistance and Review Program.
A true accounting of our revenues and expenses for each year is a spreadsheet that runs over four pages long. To spare readers from wading through details they probably don't want to wade through, an abbreviated monthly income statement is posted to this site.
