UBC training focuses on solutions
by Judith ChristensenHelpful training sessions for Union Building Committee (UBC) members have been taking place one Tuesday each month at UESF since January.
VIce President Rudi Faltus (standing) conducts weekly trainings for UBC members.
At each session, we have worked with a variety of real life scenarios involving problem-solving and protecting the rights of paras and teachers at our job sites.
Though our contracts are not exactly exciting page- turners, reading through them and finding that many difficult situations
We have learned how to create and maintain effective UBCs at our schools, focusing on ensuring that everyone is fairly represented. We studied staffing allocation forms to make sure that staff is appropriately assigned.
Another good feature has been the emphasis on communication with pointers on how to move from unproductive adversarial talk with administrators to discussions focused on collaborative solutions. The best part has been talking with folks from other schools, ranging from UBC newbies to veterans, and getting advice on how they have solved problems. There has been a real sense of camaraderie and a generosity of the more experienced to guide the rest of us.
We look forward to learning more about the new student weighted formula and how to make sure that the voice of the school staff is heard loudly and clearly in the decisions made by our School Site Councils. Clearly, a strong, well-informed, and active UBC will be even more important with the new site based budgeting.
